The Lampsins House

Shipowner Cornelis Lampsins built this grand mansion in 1641, funded by his privateering fortune. His family kept twelve warships at sea, armed with an official letter of marque from the States-General. Not piracy, but legal plunder with a license.

St. James’ Tower

The stone base of this tower dates back to the 14th century, but the best story takes place at the top. As a ten-year-old rascal, Michiel de Ruyter is said to have climbed the spire—a fitting preview of the ascent he would later make, from rope-maker’s boy to admiral.

Bellamy Park

Where outdoor terraces now sit, a harbor full of fishing and merchant ships lay for centuries. It wasn’t until 1909 that it was filled in and the square was named after the local poet Jacobus Bellamy. The fountain honors Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken, authors of “Sara Burgerhart” (1782), often called the first Dutch novel.

Super leuke city escape met een interessant historisch verhaal! Een mooie route door de stad met leuke puzzels. Zelfs als je de stad al kent is het een aanrader. De pauzeknop is ook ideaal, waardoor we tussendoor lekker konden lunchen. Al met al erg leuk!
