Middelburg City Hall

The city hall is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic city halls in the Netherlands. Construction began as early as 1452, and the facade features 25 statues of Zeeland counts and countesses. After the bombardment of May 1940, it was carefully rebuilt, and the tower still bears the nickname “Malle Betje.”

Abbey Square and the herb garden

The centuries-old Abbey complex forms the heart of Middelburg. In the hidden herb garden, Hans Lipperhey himself sits in bronze on a bench, peering through his very first telescope. Walk inside via the Cloisters and feel free to sit down beside him.

Oostkerk

This striking octagonal domed church was funded by extra taxes on beer and wine. Construction took so long that locals joked the skeleton above the entrance was the contractor, who hadn’t lived to see the end of the project.

Super leuke city escape met een interessant historisch verhaal! Een mooie route door de stad met leuke puzzels. Zelfs als je de stad al kent is het een aanrader. De pauzeknop is ook ideaal, waardoor we tussendoor lekker konden lunchen. Al met al erg leuk!
