The Doelenpoort and the Arsenal

The Doelenpoort, dating from 1645, gave access to the Doelen, the training grounds of the Leiden civic guard. After the Relief of Leiden, the two marksmen’s guilds were merged and swapped their medieval longbows and crossbows for muskets. The building next to it, the Arsenal, was where the city’s ammunition was stored and is currently used by Leiden University.

The Weddesteeg and De Put Windmill

Rembrandt van Rijn was born on the Weddesteeg in 1606, the son of a miller whose mills stood nearby on the city walls. He spent his youth and the start of his career here, gathering the knowledge that would later make him famous in Amsterdam. The windmill by the water immediately brings to life the environment in which the Netherlands’ most famous painter grew up.

The Burcht of Leiden

The Burcht is not actually a real castle, but an artificial hill from the tenth or eleventh century, raised at the point where the Old and New Rhine meet. On top stands only a ring wall, without a castle or tower ever having been built there, making it unique in the Netherlands. During the Siege of Leiden, it served as a lookout post, and today the panoramic terrace is one of the city’s most beautiful free viewpoints.

Het was heel leuk om op een andere manier door de stad te lopen. Ook al kenden we de stad al, zagen en leerden we toch weer meer door de puzzels en het verhaal. Ik ben benieuwd naar de andere City Escapes :)

Leuke middag gehad met the city escape! De puzzels waren uitdagend, maar erg leuk om samen op te lossen. Fijn ook dat je gewoon je eigen tempo bepaalt en tussendoor even kunt stoppen voor een drankje.
